Check It Out: The Widow

What would you do if you were married to a potential killer? In Fiona Barton’s debut novel, The Widow, she tackles this exact question.

Before his demise, Glen was the number one suspect in the abduction and potential murder of two-year-old Bella Elliott, who was kidnapped from her front lawn –years ago, much to the dismay and heartbreak of her mother.

Assigned to the case is Detective Inspector Bob Sparks, who doggedly pursues the case with the help of journalist Kate Waters. Using Jean, Sparks, and Kate as alternating narrators, Barton weaves her thrilling tale, leaving it up to the reader to investigate if the recently deceased Glen, was in fact, guilty of the crime. A compelling storyline and page-turning suspense make this a read that one could easily finish in a day.

Fiona Barton has been captivating readers with her writing skills for years. Before becoming an author, she worked as a journalist, news editor, and chief reporter, even winning Reporter of the Year at the National Press Awards before she decided to switch gears and try her hand a writing a novel. Her writing chops really shine through as she manages to tell a heart-thumping whodunit without being graphic or gruesome.
