The National Council on Teacher Quality’s report on more than 700 undergraduate secondary teacher preparation programs puts Coe College and University of Iowa in the top 16 programs in the country.  The state also had schools in the top tier of programs, according the NCTQ’s President Kate Walsh.

“Coe College, Iowa State, St. Ambrose, Coe College, all did very well.  They were all in the upper ten percentile in the nation, which is a very high percentage.”

She added that the school’s chose good students for their programs and made sure to prepare them well for the classroom.

“So they pay a lot of attention to giving them high quality student teaching experience, and they did learn how to manage student behavior.”

Walsh says no secondary teacher program in Iowa was in the lowest tier either, which is rare. For Siouxland Public Media, I’m Mary Hartnett.
