The Iowa House will consider a bill this week that would direct those arrested for driving while impaired or texting to take part in a sobriety monitoring program. Siouxland Public Media’s Mary Hartnett has this report.

Lawmakers passed Senate File 444 Thursday. It envisions a program similar to the 24/7 program in South Dakota and four other states. They require impaired-driving offenders to visit a monitoring center for a breath test twice daily. Remote monitoring and patches also could be used. Those who fail would be jailed for up to 24 hours.
The legislation would also expand Iowa's homicide-by-vehicle statute to include the use of electronic devices while driving. Drivers using a device while driving whocause a fatality could face a sentence of up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.
