Iowa will have its first female governor this morning. The Senate voted Monday to confirm Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad to serve as U.S. ambassador to China. Branstad will resign and be sworn in as ambassador at 10:00 a.m., and Lt. Governor Kim Reynolds will be sworn in shortly thereafter. She described the process at yesterday’s press conference.

“Preceeding that at 10:30, in the rotunda, I will be administered the official swearing in by Chief Justice Cady, and we’ll have an opportunity to give my first gubanatorial address to the people of Iowa.”
Reynolds says she will hold a news conference tomorrow (Thursday) to explain the transition process along with the choosing of a new lieutenant governor. Reynolds says she has been meeting with the heads many different government departments to prepare for her new role.

Governor Branstad said he’s leaving Iowa in good hands with Kim Reynolds. Branstad is the nation’s longest serving governor.
