New Rules for Teachers Under the Influence

A new law will require supervisors to report teachers disciplined for being under the influence of alcohol or drugs at school to Iowa's licensing agency. Siouxland Public Media’s Mary Hartnett has this report.

The law was meant to resolve a loophole exposed by a high-profile case in Ankeny when a teacher was caught with a beer and was legally intoxicated during a school Valentine's Day party. The district did not immediately report the incident to the Iowa Board of Educational Examiners.  Ankeny school officials said there was no legal obligation to report her to the agency at the time.

House File 217 requires school districts to report any licensed employee disciplined for possessing or being under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs at school or school events.

The law passed with almost unanimous support in the House and Senate.

For Siouxland Public Media, I’m Mary Hartnett.
