Planned Parenthood Closing in Sioux City

Planned Parenthood Shutdown in Sioux City 051917

Planned Parenthood of the Heartland announced yesterday that it’s closing its Sioux City clinic and three others in Iowa on June 30th.  A Republican backed law that defunded the group is behind the move.  Siouxland Public Media’s Mary Hartnett has this report.

Gov. Terry Branstad signed a measure last week that blocks public money for family planning services that provide abortions. Iowa will end the federal Medicaid family planning network waiver, and use about $3.3 million dollars to create its own family planning network that doesn’t perform abortions.  Planned Parenthood is closing health centers in Bettendorf, Burlington, Keokuk and Sioux City. Eight Iowa health centers will remain open.  Planned Parenthood says the impact will be devastating for its minority and low income patients in those four communities.  But anti-abortion Iowa groups told the Des Moines Register there would be no reduction in women’s health care services. Planned Parenthood is Iowa's largest provider of abortions, although no taxpayer money is spent on abortions. For Siouxland Public Media, I’m Mary Hartnett.
