State lawmakers in South Dakota take up a bill today that would immediately reopen about 30 of the most used lakes and sloughs formed by flooding after state maps were formally drawn in the late 1800s. In March, the state Supreme Court ruled that state agencies don't have the legal authority to grant access to flooded waters or ice on private property without legislative approval. Business owners near the waters say they have been losing money since then. The bill clarifies the rights of landowners to keep hunters and anglers off private property. More than 2,000 other non-meandered bodies of water 40 acres or larger would stay open unless property owners chose to close them. For Siouxland Public Media, I’m Mary Hartnett.
