Sioux City Symphony Orchestra Conductor/Music Director Ryan Haskins sits down with Gretchen on this episode of Opus. Ryan has a preview of the music on the schedule for this upcoming season of concerts, including film music from John Williams' score to Star Wars A New Hope.

Gretchen has a bevy of guests dropping by a live broadcast of Opus at Momo's, next door to the Orpheum Theater, the site for this weekend's ground-breaking performances of West Side Story. She talks with SCSO Board President, Juliet Everist, as well as Christie Tremaine. Also she talks with SCSO Conductor, Ryan Haskins and the production's Associate Director, Christopher Murrah among others.

An action packed Opus with Part 1 devoted to the massive West Side Story Production that the Sioux City Symphony is working on for next week.  Gretchen talks with Maestro Haskins as well as Alaina Viau who is overseeing just about every aspect of the production from actors to scenery and lighting. Also we get an actor's perspective from Officer Krupke, himself, played by Matthew Krob.

Ode plays at the Marquee with opening act Edem Soul Music, there's art at the Benson Building and we blast off into a month of One Book One Siouxland with Margot Lee Shetterly's, Hidden Figures.

Gretchen welcomes Ryan Haskins, Music Director and Conductor of the Sioux City Symphony Orchestra. He'll talk about Cherish the Ladies, a pre-St. Patricks Day evening of Irish and Celtic music. Also the Irish Fest, which gets underway with appetizers, green beer and local musicians playing Irish music in the Orpheum lobby before the concert.

Irish and Celtic group Cherish the Ladies will join the Sioux City Symphony this Saturday Night. The accomplished group of women are led by Joanie Madden, who holds a World Championship in Irish Music in both flute and tin whistle. They also bring dancers and the evening will get an early start with Irish fare available in a special pre-concert get together in the Orpheum before the show. 

A Preview of the Sioux City Symphony Orchestra's Church Windows program on this edition of Opus. Gretchen talks with SCSO Composer of the Year Patrick O'Malley. The Orchestra will present a World Premiere of his work. Maestro Ryan Haskins will also lead them through music of Debussy, Hovhaness and Respighi.

Respighi's Church Windows gets the title nod, but the program around it also feature a world premiere from SCSO Composer of the Year, Patrick O'Malley, Debussy's Sunken Cathedral and a mysterious symphony by Alan Hovhaness.

The Sioux City Symphony perform their annual Christmas with the Symphony Concert tomorrow (Saturday) night at the Orpheum Theater. Three area handbell choirs, a dynamic up and coming local violinist and the Mighty Wurlitzer all make appearances.
