June marked the official beginning of summer, which means long hours spent soaking up the sun beside the pool, cutting the grass on warm evenings, and going on road trips to wondrous destinations. Why not spend these nostalgic summer activities enjoying a great audiobook?
I thought it would be fitting to dedicate this week’s Check It Out to one of my all-time favorite audiobooks, The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova. I had the pleasure of listening to this story on one of my many road trips from Iowa to Wisconsin. The intricate plot, fast-paced storyline, and edge-of-your-seat suspense made it a great road trip read.
Vampire fiction and historical fiction enthusiasts alike will revel in this clever reworking of the classic legend of Dracula.
A teenage American girl, living in Amsterdam with her diplomat father, discovers a medieval book and cache of letters in her father’s library. Little does she know that she will become the latest in a series of historians, including her father, to investigate the possible surviving legacy of Vlad the Impaler.
Told through narratives, flashbacks, letters, and rounded out by a colorful cast of characters, The Historian takes readers on a harrowing journey across space and time to finally answer the age-old question: is Dracula still alive?
Check out The Historian and other suspenseful works of historical fiction like it at the Sioux City Public Library.
