The phenomenon of making movies based on books has increased over the past several years with franchises like Harry Potter, Twilight, and the Hunger Games and this year is no exception. Books like Paper Towns by John Green and Me, Earl, and the Dying Girl by Jesse Andrews are arriving in theaters this month with a flurry of excitement. And while it can seem like teen stories dominate the books to movie machine, books of all genres are being given the Hollywood treatment these days, including the science fiction best seller The Martian by Andy Weir.
The Martian tells the story of Mark Watney, a botanist and mechanical engineer, who is stranded on Mars after his crew is forced to abandon their mission. Believed by his crew and everyone back on Earth to be dead, Mark is forced to deal with the reality that being rescued, if even possible, could be years away. Using his knowledge of plant life and engineering to survive, Mark must find a way to provide air, food, water for himself all while trying to let those back home know he is still alive.
An exciting, yet accessible, Sci-fi thriller, Weir has combined humor, science, and survival seamlessly into a suspenseful and compelling read that drops the reader on Mars right alongside the courageous hero! The movie, starring Matt Damon, will be released on Thanksgiving day, which gives readers plenty of time to stop down to any Sioux City Public Library location to check out a copy.
