Chevy Volt Sales Begin To Show Improvement

LINDA WERTHEIMER, HOST:

Our last word in business today comes from an American carmaker that was forced to change. We're talking about General Motors, which is in the midst of a turnaround after its bankruptcy and major restructuring. And our last word is: in-house rivalry.

The new GM is pinning some of its hopes for the future on its gas-electric hybrid car, the Chevy Volt. After a slow start last year, Volt sales are beginning to pick up a little speed.

STEVE INSKEEP, HOST:

A little speed. GM has sold about 7,000 of the cars so far this year - not a lot, but that is equal to just about all the sales last year. And what's more, in terms of sales this year, the Volt has even outmuscled the Chevy Corvette.

Volt sales might be beating out the classic Corvette, but it is too soon to tell if Prince will be writing hit songs about little red Volts. (Singing) Little electric Volt.

Anyway, that's the business news on MORNING EDITION, from NPR News. I'm Steve Inskeep.

WERTHEIMER: And I'm Linda Wertheimer. Transcript provided by NPR, Copyright NPR.
