A Nebraska lawmaker proposed a bill yesterday to encourage more business and economic growth on the Native American reservations. Siouxland Public Media’s Mary Hartnett has this report.

Native American businesses on reservations don't pay income taxes, but this bill extends that to non-Native businesses operating within a special economic zone. Sales and use taxes would be exempt on the first $10 million dollars of taxable purchases. The Department of Revenue would then to enter revenue sharing agreements in which the state would share 20 percent of the tribal taxes in lieu of collecting state sales and use taxes.

Opponents of the bill had concerns about the tax exemptions for qualified businesses, fearing the tax burden would fall to the rest of Nebraska.  For Siouxland Public Media, I’m Mary Hartnett…
